Where is the Fountain of Youth? Closer than you think!
The first immediate thing you can do to benefit yourself is to smile more. It gives you an immediate emotional boost, and lights up the faces of people you pass, to say nothing of exercising those facial muscles. You don't want them drooping into a permanent frown, do you? And speaking of drooping muscles, what else can use a little tightening? Creaky knees, ornery hips, and wobbly ankles can all benefit from a little exercise to strengthen the supporting muscles. Believe it or not, micro movement, isometric tension and no-sweat chair exercises make a huge difference with balance and stability as long as you add the key ingredient: consistency.
Your posture is another piece to the youth puzzle. When you stand up straight, it takes the strain off your neck and shoulder muscles. Here is a little self-test for you. Stand up against a wall with your heels and shoulders touching the wall. Have someone measure the distance from the back of your head to that wall. Each inch in the gap, adds ten pounds of weight for your neck to support.
Now, think about your head position when you're hunched over a tablet or smart phone. You could easily be putting 40 pounds of extra strain on your neck and shoulders. No wonder you have headaches and your shoulders ache at night. And when you straighten your upper back, you literally 'stand tall'. And you ladies who gave up the high heels, congratulations, but don't forget to tighten those buttocks and add a little swing to your hips. You'll get the isometric benefits without the toe crushing balance distortion and add a little spring to your step.
